Desert martyrs fasting

Desert martyrs fasting

In a bowl, mix the flour with the salt and sugar, make a hole and add the yeast dissolved in a little warm water, oil, essences, orange peel and lemon grated.

We start kneading by gradually adding warm water until we get a dough that does not stick to our hands.

Cover with a towel and leave until it doubles in volume.

Divide the dough into 16 pieces. Spread each piece in the form of a stick and take one end to form a snail up to half and on the other side form a snail in the opposite direction.

We place them in a tray lined with baking paper. We cover them and leave them to rise for about 20 minutes.

Grease them with sugar water syrup, put them in the preheated oven for about 20-30 minutes until they brown nicely.

Meanwhile, make the syrup from the water with sugar and lemon peel, finally add the essence and remove the lemon peel.

Let the martyrs cool enough to warm them, syrup them with warm syrup, grease them with honey with a brush and sprinkle with coconut

1. Dissolve the yeast in a bowl of lukewarm milk. Put the flour in a bowl (saucepan), give it a pinch of salt and put the milk with the dissolved yeast in the center. Add the 3 tablespoons of oil and grated peel of an orange or, if you prefer, lemon.

2. Put the remaining 5 tablespoons of sugar in the remaining milk and stir to melt the sugar. If you want more fragrant martyrs, you can use an essence, as everyone appreciates. Lightly put the milk over the flour and at the same time mix to incorporate all the flour until you get the dough.

3. Knead the dough well, 4-5 minutes until it becomes elastic. We leave it in the heat, to ferment for an hour.

4. Divide the dough into 8 balls from which we form 8 strings & # 8211 so many martyrs come out of 500 g of flour - thicker and we simply weave them into eight shapes. Put the martyrs in the oven tray on baking paper and let them rest for another 10 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, put 100 ml of water (a cup) on the stove in a kettle and melt 2 tablespoons of sugar in water. Grease the martyrs with this syrup and put them in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. It is best not to rely on a specific time & # 8211 because it also depends on the stove & # 8211 and check the oven. When they are browned, then they are ready and we stop the fire. It bakes very quickly. When they are warm, grease them with heated honey for fluidization - and sprinkle with crushed walnuts. If we don't have honey, we also grease them with sugar syrup.

I smeared them with honey but I didn't have any nuts so I ate them like that. Anyway, they came out very fluffy and out of eight Moldovan martyrs I only got half of one. But I made a commitment to do it soon, and I want to surprise the girls and make them syrups.

Moldovan fasting martyrs - recipe for March 9 (video)

"Martyrs" or "Saints" is a symbolic dish in many parts of the country, which is being prepared for March 9, hence the name "40 Martyrs".

In Moldova they are made from rolls of dough, braided like octopuses and baked in the oven, and in Muntenia they are made small like pretzels and boiled in water with sugar and walnuts. In this article we present a simple, traditional recipe for fasting Moldovan martyrs.

Ingredients for a tray (12 saints)

• 1 kg of flour
• 2 tablespoons margarine
• 1 cube of fresh yeast (as big as a walnut)
• 3 tablespoons oil
• 100-200 g of sugar
• 200 ml of vegetable milk
• 200 ml of water (or all milk)
• 1 teaspoon of salt
• spices: lemon, orange, vanilla

Put the flour in a large bowl. Make a hole in the middle.

Put 200 ml of water in a kettle on the fire. When it starts to sizzle, pour it in the center of the flour and fill with another 200 ml of cold water or cold milk.

You can use only water or only milk, or a combination, as we used. Milk can be soy, rice, oats, almonds, seeds, nuts, etc. These can be obtained at home. The milk gives a very good taste and a soft and fluffy texture to the dough.

Mix in the center of the bowl incorporating a little flour and if it is warm on the finger, add the crushed yeast. Pass it with a fork, add salt and sugar and mix. Leave it to rise for 10-15 minutes, then add the soft margarine and spices.

Start kneading with your hands until you get an elastic dough. Gradually add the oil. The softer the dough, the fluffier the saints will be.

Cover the basin with a towel and let it rise for at least half an hour.

Take a piece of dough on the work table lined with flour. Break it into 12 equal small pieces. Take each piece of dough and spread it out in the form of a string as long as the table. Put it in half and start knitting from one end, then the other. Join the braided cord at the ends to get a coil, then put one side over the other to get an octave.

How they intertwine Moldavian martyrs & # 8211 video:

Place the saints in the tray lined with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius and let it bake for about 40 minutes.

After they have cooled a little, grease them with a brush soaked in liquid honey (slightly melted if sweetened) and sprinkle ground walnuts on top (possibly mixed with a little vanilla sugar).
