Philly Cheese Steak Pizza

Philly Cheese Steak is a classic around here. I grew up eating them and never knew that other parts of the country had no idea what it was until, about 7 or 8 years ago, I was having a conversation with a friend who lives in the midwest. We were talking about what we were making for dinner. When I said I was making cheesesteaks she thought I was making steak with cheese on top. These days it seems like most people know what a cheese steak is but still haven’t tried one. Now you can have a cheesesteak at home.

Family Pizza Night

We love having pizza night. We make pizza, watch a movie and hang out together in the living room. Since homemade is always better than premade, I like to make our pizza. Homemade tastes better but most people do not want to spend a lot of time making their pizza. With this recipe, your Philly Cheese Steak pizza is ready in 30 minutes, which is about the same amount of time as it takes to bake a frozen pizza, and believe me, this homemade pizza is SO MUCH BETTER!

What is a Philly Cheesesteak Pizza

A Philly Cheesesteak Pizza is all of the flavors of a cheesesteak on top of a homemade pizza crust. For us, it is important that the pizza crust be homemade because it just tastes better. I think I have tried all of the premade pizza doughs available and nothing tastes as good as a freshly made pizza dough.

What is the Best Steak to Use for Philly Cheese Steak Pizza

When it comes to the best steak for Cheesesteak pizza there are several that you can use many different cuts of steak. We tend to use minute steaks which are often on sale at my grocery store. Many people prefer to use beef tenderloin, ribeye or flank steak. The key is to have a tender steak that you can cut into very thin slices.

What is Minute Steak

Minute steaks are steaks that are cut very thin and often pounded. It is usually cut from sirloin or round steaks. The best thing about minute steaks is that is cooks quickly and it works great for this easy Philly Cheese Steak Pizza.

What Type of Cheese Goes on a Philly Cheesesteak Pizza

This is going to come down to preference. There is a lot of debate on what kind of cheese goes best on a Philly Cheese Steak, and that will trickle down to what type to put on your pizza. You can use provolone, swiss, cheddar, cheddar cheese sauce or mozzarella. We use mozzarella so that everyone in the house likes it, but when it is just for hubby and me, we use provolone or American.

Is it Easy to Make Homemade Pizza Dough

When it comes to making homemade pizza dough, this recipe could not be easier. Using Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast the rise time is only 10 minutes. That means this dough will rise while you are cooking the steak.

Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast comes in a 3 pack. If you want another idea of how to use your yeast, try making these homemade dinner rolls with cinnamon butter. There are many other recipes on Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast website.

Why Didn’t My Pizza Dough Work

While this homemade pizza dough recipe is extremely easy, there are 2 things that can make it no work. If you pay attention to these 2 things, you should have no problem with your dough.

  • Water Too Hot: When you are adding the water to the dough, you want it to be very warm but not hot but the water also can not be cold. Add water heated to 120˚F-130˚F and follow recipe instructions. Always use a thermometer to check the temperature. If the water is too hot it will kill the yeast.
  • The Dough Didn’t Rise: The 2 reasons that the dough didn’t rise is the water being too hot and the yeast is expired. It is important that the yeast is not expired. When you buy the Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast make sure it isn’t past its date. The date is written on the packets.

Once the pizza crust is rolled out and ready, add the sauce. Spread the sauce evenly around the pizza to the edge of the crust.

Next, add the cheese. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the sauce. Then add the steak.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

Mix the Philly Cheese Steak Warm Dip as directed on the box. Spread the warm dip on top of the pizza crust and thick or thin as you prefer. If you spread it thin, you will have plenty left over for more pizzas or use the remaining as the warm dip.

Cook the thin steak, or use leftovers, and season as you like. I used the Ultimate Steak Seasonings.

Next, add the sliced mushrooms to the steak for a little extra flavoring on the mushrooms.

Top the pizza with the steak and mushrooms, add the diced bell peppers, add the diced onions.

Top with the shredded Provolone cheese.

Bake the pizza in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until the crust is crispy and the cheese has melted.

Homemade Philly Cheesesteaks

Philly cheesesteaks are iconic&mdashand for good reason. This is our version of the sandwich, and it satisfies our craving every time. Even though we consulted real live Philadelphians (!), this is not everyone's idea of an authentic Philly cheesesteak. Feel free to adjust the recipe to your personal preference, promise we won't be mad. 😅

What's the best cut of meat for a cheesesteak?

You want to pick a type of steak that is thin and well marbled. It's important for the steak to cook quickly and still be nice and juicy. We typically use sirloin for it's thinness and price. A ribeye will work well too.

What kind of cheese should I use?

This is where most start to argue. Some say Cheez Whiz is the only proper cheese, but others love provolone. Most places in Philly will have both as options so no need to stress if you want Provolone or even American cheese. If you want to make your own cheese sauce for your cheesesteak our nacho cheese would be a good place to start!

How do I slice my steak thinner?

Throw your steak into the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes to make thin slicing much easier.

Made these? Let us know how it went in the comment section below!
